A Journey of Growth: An Intern’s Two Cents
Before I begin, let me introduce myself. I’m Cristen, a copywriter intern with Content Nation. I’ve been interning for three months now, and it’s been a wild ride to say the least. It’s been an exhilarating journey, though it wasn’t without challenges to get to this point.
As I first embarked on my journey as a copywriter intern at Content Nation, the concept of work from home jobs presented both fascination and uncertainty.
On one hand, the flexibility and the opportunity to contribute to a company whose vision I believed in from the comfort of my own home appealed to me. On the other hand, the question remained—how would this play out?
Daily Routine: A Day in the Life of A Copywriter Intern
In the beginning, it was difficult to navigate work-life balance because work and life happened all in the same place. However, my initial thoughts quickly changed as I settled into a routine. Turns out, the malleable nature of remote work was the defining ingredient for cooking up a healthy work-life balance.
My days often begin with a virtual cup of coffee and acquiring my days’ tasks. A typical day tasks me with various copywriting projects, each wildly different yet similar. This makes for a perfect challenge throughout the week. The autonomy to decide the flow of my day allows me to find the perfect blend of focused individual work, which we call “focus mode”, and collaborative work.
Team Collaboration: Closing the Distance when Working from Home
At first, effective and open communication between remote workers seemed challenging to me. However, in no time, I quickly found my feet in adjusting to this dynamic. Through this experience, I have recognised just how great a collaboration tool the internet truly is.
Virtual meetings with Google Meet, huddles and messages on Slack, and project communications through Gmail make up a virtual office, perfectly suited for meaningful communication. The physical distance between everyone at work feels less than it really is. This is credited to the continuous effort made to maintain a sense of connection through regular updates and team meetings.
Learning Experience: Exceeding Expectations
My internship at Content Nation ushered in an era of transformation from the get-go. Beyond the obvious development of my copywriting skills, I have begun to navigate the intricacies of remote working. Adapting to online procedures and leveraging technology for productivity is just a first step into the fast-paced and diverse world of copywriting; I still have much more to learn.
Company Culture: Fostering Unity
At Content Nation, nothing is more valuable within the heart of the company than positivity and a sense of community. From bi-weekly team training sessions and ‘HR check-ins’ to ‘Friday’s Fact or Fiction’ and spontaneous meet-up days, genuine work relationships are built and cultivated. These sessions made me feel heard and valued as a new team member, while also allowing me to have fun and witness the cohesive nature of the company at work in person.
Advice For When You’re Starting A Remote Internship
To those considering a remote internship at a marketing agency, here’s my advice:
- Befriend your laptop
Remote work means being in front of your laptop for most of the day. Once you’re comfortable with your screen, you’ll start to see yourself thrive. - Embrace the flexibility of remote working
It’s important to welcome the flexible nature of the job, but stick to a routine for sustainable productivity. - Don’t ignore communication
It may be intimidating at first but you should actively participate in virtual collaboration. This helps you learn from and about your colleagues, and paves the way for more opportunities! - Know that the future is digital
Take advantage of the websites and tools at your fingertips, they come in handy more often than not.
As my internship continues to unfold, I have shifted my mindset, from thinking that a remote job was a challenge to recognising it as a chance at growth.
The adaptable nature of the company has created a collective appreciation for finding solutions to physical barriers. The lessons and skills I have learned during this remote internship have proven invaluable, challenging my perspective on work as a whole.
As I look to the future, I am grateful that I got the chance to be a part of a team that was so helpful and insightful, and will always take a “where there’s a will there’s a way” mentality with me.
